Elephant up a pole Wassail - Brandon Marshes - 24th January 2016
The tradition of wassailing (alt sp wasselling)falls into two distinct categories: The house-visiting wassail and the orchard-visiting wassail. The orchard-visiting wassail refers to the ancient custom of visiting orchards in cider-producing regions of England, reciting incantations and singing to the trees , and hanging cider soaked toast in the branches as a gift to promote a good harvest for the coming year
The purpose of wassailing is to awake the cider apple trees and to scare away evil spirits to ensure a good harvest of fruit in the Autumn.
The Wassail at Brandon Marshes near Coventry was preceded by gathering of a number of Morris Dance sides as below - a great time was had by all and at least the weather kept dry
